Our Outing to the S & S Shortline Railroad Park

The Saturday before our daughter-in-law April and our grandchildren left for Texas, we paid a visit to the S & S Shortline Railroad Park in Farmington, Utah (577 N 1525 WFarmington, UT 84025(801) 451-0222). Rides on the replica trains provide for a great family activity.

The park is laid out with thousands of feet of extremely narrow-gauge rails. Everything seemed designed with great care and a feeling for authenticity. There are several engines built to scale and supported by an on-site maintenance facility, working crossing guards, signs, a tunnel, trestles, and costumed engineers.

Our children and grandchildren seemed to enjoy the playground near the railroad at least as much as riding the motorized trains.

This place looks awesome! Is it new? I've never even heard of it before.

The S & S Short Line Railroad Park has been around for some time. It looks like the originators started small.

I remember driving by the property when seeking a rather bucolic detour off of I-15 during all-too-frequent traffic jams. Initially, there seemed to be a set of cute litte minature railroad tracks running around this guy's front yard.

Those tracks are still there but they now are just the tip of a rather immense recreational network of railroad tracks, scale model buildings, working crossing gates with signs and signals, playgrounds, maintenance sheds, and historical installations.

Laurel discovered the true nature of this scale model monument to the romance of the railroad while commuting daily to the Davis School District bus compound located nearby.
